Petrarch the Father of Humanism

Francesco Petrarca, aka Patrarch, was a poet born in 1304. Patrarch had a passion for writing at a young age but his father wanted him to become a lawyer. When his father died Patrarch left the study of law and took up various clerical positions which also gave him time for his writings and literary studies. In the year 1327 he met Laura de Noves to whom he fell in love with. From 1327 to 1368 he wrote over 366 poems dedicated to her. The collected songs and poems where collected into a book Rime Sparse. In 1333 Petrarch with became friends with Giovanni Boccaccio. After Patrarchs first visit to Rome in 1337 he and Boccaccio started writing Africa an epic about the second punic war.
Patrarch, a celebrity in his time, was sometimes referred t as the first tourist because he enjoyed traveling around Europe. He was also widely known for reviving interest in classical literature. He is considered the 'Father of Humanism' for his work revitalizing classical literature.
